I just watched "Stand By Me" for the billionth time. I first saw this when I was 13 or 14...and it has remained one of my favourites. It always makes me feel kinda sad and happy at the same time, because it reminds me of my childhood, and summertimes spent outdoors roaming woods and fields, and swimming in lakes and rivers. It seems the sun shone brighter and clearer back then...and summers were crisp, clean and full of fresh air. I guess that's how the North was when I was a kid. Here in Southern Ontario, summers are very muggy and oppressive. Not that that stops me from loving summer. But it seems they were much more pleasant when I was a kid growing up in Thunder Bay. I remember scenes like the ones depicted in the movie, of rolling hills and vast pine forests...I even crossed a train trestle or two over a wide river, the MacKenzie in particular. I also love the life-and-death themes presented in this movie, and how these inevitable facts of being human are presented from the kids' point of view. It's something I can relate to...and I remember thinking and feeling and being curious about those same things when I was a kid. I think every kid should see this movie! They will see themselves in it, for sure. I did, and still do!
