 Fashion magazines
« Thread Started on Feb 1, 2008, 10:35am »

I have to admit it--I love fashion magazines! But if you saw me, you wouldn't classify me as one of those people that have to follow every trend that comes out. I am the exact opposite actually! But I love to read and look at these magazines because to me they are a great escape from reality and a source of mindless entertainment, which we all need sometimes. Especially if you're constantly working, like I am. If you don't stop and take a break from reality once in a while, and just slow your mind and body down, you will end up stressed and in an unhealthy state. I also read a lot of serious stuff, and sometimes you need to take a break from all that.

Back in my early twenties, I boycotted all women's magazines because I thought they were detrimental to women's well-being and contributed to women having poor body image, etc. But now I'm older, I guess I've hit an age where little things like that don't bother me anymore, or don't matter. I am working at fighting the REAL enemies--the government, the food and drug agencies, major global polluters, etc. A silly fashion magazine is the least of our world's threats.

Though I still feel these magazines can make some insecure women feel unsure about their own looks and bodies. I just say, you gotta love and accept yourself, that's all. It's very liberating to rise above that kind of thinking...once you can accept yourself, and STOP putting the sum of your entire being on your looks, you can enjoy the fashion world with a clear perspective.

I can now see, recognize and appreciate the artistic aspects of fashion, and even the models themselves. Some of the photographers are very artistic. Sure some of the clothing makes you say, "Who's gonna wear THAT?" But that's not the point. The point is, it's art. It's like making a painting or sculpture, but instead of paints or clay, the artist uses fabric, thread and a sewing machine.

I know a lot of the models are super-thin, and this is one aspect of fashion that must change. Women with curves look just as good in the latest fashions as thin women. But I don't blame the models--I know a few women who are super-thin, but that's just their genes. Not every skinny person starves themselves. You can usually tell when a model is starving herself, because their bones are too big for their skin, if you know what I mean. A naturally thin person (like Kate Moss for instance) has tiny bones too. They're just tiny by genetics, not starvation.

So it's not the models that have to change, it's the fashion industry, which calls any woman with a double-digit size, "plus-sized". The agencies too have to start being open-minded about accepting women of all sizes. It's hard to believe that Cindy Crawford or Tyra Banks would be considered to big to be a supermodel by today's standards! It's crazy. But we women have to just remove ourselves from it, and not take it so personally. I believe that once we can rise above that, then we can truly enjoy the world of fashion, guilt-free!
